SALISBURY, Md. – aka DELMARVA (FEB. 26, 2017) – The Deep South’s still-largest daily once again has lured away a Maryland journalist to Atlanta to make the paper better.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution hired Mitchell Northam, who covers sports at The (Salisbury) Daily Times and, on Twitter, goes by @primetimeMitch. Northam heads south March after his last day in the Big ‘Bury. Wasting no time, he starts March 20 at the AJC, where he’ll cover breaking and all kinds of news in North Fulton (Alpharetta, Roswell, Milton and various other unincorporated areas that one day will be cities of their own). As such, we expect to see Northam hanging out at Avalon and downtown Roswell, getting scoop.
He’ll join several current and past AJC reporters with Maryland ties. Business columnist Matt Kempner, who’s been at the AJC forever, is one who remains at the paper. Several others, including Katie Leslie (Frederick News-Post who’s now in D.C. for Dallas Morning News), Kristi Swartz (pure Terrapin now at E&E News) and me, found our way to Atlanta from the Old Line State. I covered Ocean City and then cops and courts at The Daily Times from 1991-1993. I worked with Northam’s cousins, Bill Duck, before moving to Albany, Georgia. I moved to Atlanta in 1996 after the AJC rejected my application. The paper came to its senses in 1999 and hired me to cover commercial real estate. Then I came to my senses and made the move to PR in 2004.
So, we’re back to real estate. Because Northam will focus on North Fulton, he’ll write about commercial real estate whether he wants to or not. Welcome to Atlanta, Mitch.
