ATLANTA (Aug. 26, 2016) – In a move that’s been anticipated by local real estate watchers, Bloomberg LP is expected to relocate its Atlanta newsroom and operation from downtown to Midtown Atlanta.
Bloomberg is in final negotiations with Hines for a new home at 1180 Peachtree, the swanky 41-story tower across from North American Properties’ Colony Square. The building is best known as the headquarters of legal powerhouse King & Spalding, which made a similar move from downtown to Midtown a decade ago.
Peachtree Center’s North Tower has been home to Bloomberg Atlanta for several years, but the property never seemed like the ideal fit. In cities across the globe, Bloomberg operates out of trophy Class A office towers. In New York, the media operation anchors Bloomberg Tower, a glitzy glass tower at 731 Lexington Ave.
CBRE Atlanta is representing Bloomberg in its search for new space.
1180 Peachtree will provide Bloomberg with the image it wants. Bloomberg also considered relocating to tony Buckhead, where it checked out 3344 Peachtree. Selfishly, we wish Bloomberg moved to 3344 so we could hang out with Bureau Chief Anita Sharpe (seated at far right in photo below), Duane Stanford (well, maybe not Duane since he left for Beverage Digest awhile back – thanks for reader Dave Mildenberg for the reminder), Steve Matthews, Margaret Newkirk and other staffers. Plus, it would have been good for Skyline client JLL.
That aside, 1180 Peachtree and Midtown make sense for Bloomberg. I bet Dow Jones follows suit and moves its Wall Street Journal Atlanta bureau from downtown (SunTrust Plaza) to Midtown, too.
