Atlanta lost a beautiful soul today when Kristen Mohn Dellaporta passed away after giving cancer a hell of a fight for the past 3+ years.
Kristen established herself as a well-known social media and retail guru while serving as CFO of Abbadabba’s cool shoes. She went public with her battle v. breast cancer early on, and she leverage social media (Instagram, Facebook and early on Twitter) to keep friends and colleagues up to date.
I met Kristen when I was asked in 2012 to moderate an ICSC Southeast panel on social media with her on it. Sarah Malcolm, ICSC’s social media maven, said Kristen would anchor the panel. I checked out her @abbaks Twitter account and saw she knew what she was doing right away. During our prep calls, Jeff DeHart, @retailjeff, said Kristen was fighting breast cancer but that she very openly discussed it on Twitter. That in itself was brave enough.
I assume she was scared shitless during the fight, but she rarely let on and proved to be more positive with cancer than most people without it. I’m sure there’s a reason for her death too soon in her life, and I bet it manifests itself one day. In the meantime, we’ll remember that smile and her devotion to the Falcons and look to her blogposts for inspiration when we’re dealing with problems likely much smaller than terminal cancer.
